What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A Practical Guide
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite. Where SEO asks “does my page rank?”, GEO asks “does ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity mention me when someone asks about my topic?”
How is GEO different from SEO?
The two share foundations but measure different things.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in search results | Be mentioned and cited in AI answers |
| Unit of success | Position and clicks | Mentions, citations, sentiment |
| Key signals | Relevance, links, page experience | Entity clarity, crawl access, quotable answers, authority |
| Measured with | Search Console, rank trackers | Repeated prompt testing across AI assistants |
AI assistants still lean heavily on pages that rank well, so SEO stays the base layer.
Why do AI assistants ignore some brands?
In my audits, it almost always comes down to one of three gaps:
- Access. The site blocks AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt or at the firewall.
- Identity. The brand’s name, description and profiles differ from platform to platform, so AI systems can’t confidently match them.
- Quotability. The answer is buried under marketing copy, so a competitor with a clearer page gets cited instead.
How do you optimise for AI search, step by step?
- Open the doors. Allow reputable AI crawlers in robots.txt and check your CDN or WAF isn’t silently blocking them.
- Define the entity. Write one canonical description of your brand or yourself and use it word for word everywhere.
- Add structured data. Use Organization or Person schema with a stable
@idand asameAslist of every official profile. - Write answer-first. Open each key page with a two to three sentence direct answer, then the detail.
- Use question-style headings. Match how people phrase questions to AI assistants.
- Show evidence. Real numbers, dates, sources and named authors make content safer for an AI to cite.
- Earn mentions. Profiles, interviews, guest posts and listings give AI systems independent confirmation.
How do you measure GEO results?
Build a list of 20–50 prompts your buyers would realistically ask. Run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews once a month, and log:
- Whether your brand is mentioned
- Whether your site is cited as a source
- Which competitors appear instead
- How accurately you are described
Over time this gives you a “share of AI answers” metric, the GEO counterpart to rank tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap heavily. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) usually refers to featured snippets and voice answers, while GEO focuses on generative AI assistants. The tactics are largely the same.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is cheap to add and harmless, but not every AI system reads it yet. Crawl access, structured data and clear content matter far more.
Can small sites win in AI search?
Yes. AI assistants often cite niche pages that answer a specific question clearly, even when the site is small.
